January 18th is Sanctity of Human Life Sunday. This date has arrived in the midst of news about death. Adults and children are being targeted with violence and death. Whether it is in Syria, Africa, Australia, France or the United States, the images of horror and grief are the same.

Abortion is another violent death.

What can we do to focus our attention on life? How do we respond to this verse in the Bible?

I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that your offspring may live, loving the Lord your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to him, for he is your life and length of days . . . Deuteronomy 30:11

We need to respect the way God has designed our bodies.

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. Genesis 1:27

My training as a nurse led me to accept the medical profession’s viewpoint on life, death and medications—until an abortion took place in the labor/delivery unit of a hospital where I was employed. This was the beginning of my doubts about some accepted practices.

As I raised my children I needed a questioning spirit, time to do my own research and wisdom from the Lord. It is possible to look at the menstrual cycle as a burden or as feminine cycle of fertility. We can help our daughters to understand this system.

I am grateful for experiences that have led me to trust the way God has designed a woman’s body. As a nurse I had the opportunity to assist with a homebirth practice. Some of my best lessons in childbirth came through my time with this practice.

Pregnancy

Many young woman need help in making their way threw all the messages raining down in our culture. I am glad that midwifery is gaining some ground and grateful for organizations like Women Speak For Themselves.

We need to teach our daughters the truth about fertility—it is a gift. Our hormonal system is intricate. Hormonal contraception disrupts this amazing system. It is possible to practice family planning without using pills, IUDs and implants.

Adoption—giving up a child to adoption or choosing to adopt a child supports life.

As Christians we can support women that find themselves pregnant and in a difficult situation. We can pray for women that have experienced an abortion—pray for healing in their lives.
